The Mythologies of Guglielmone

By Alfonso Gumucio Dagron *

I first read the book in 2005.   I took notes as I usually do when a book interests me and I was left with the desire to comment.  It was above my desktop, along with other pending tasks all this time until I decided to read again, and compare them to take further notes with the above.

A second reading has not changed my opinion on these items.   Elizabeth newspaper published in the Mail South during his stay in Sucre, the capital of Bolivia, between 1999 and 2000.

The first thing to say is that usually we write for Daily time takes it like the wind autumn leaves.   The expiration of the newspaper articles is proverbial unless you write them in a planned, intended first and last ever see them bound in the form of book, as Vargas Llosa.   In the case Guglielmone Elizabeth, whose texts were circumstantially written and  shooting issues, there is also an intention to endure.   Perhaps academic history the author (clearly  identifiable in the bibliography at the end of the book, although not cited in their texts), the achieved in some journalistic reflections discard the circumstantial case and take flight into a dimension perennial.

The author has followed the footsteps of Barthes, quoted in the literature, which “Mythologies,” I read more than thirty years ago as a student in Paris, is precisely an attempt to transcend the everyday, the fait divers (the become common, common or  accidental) to develop a anecdote from a reflection that transcends circumstantial. Who knows what awaits what one writes. There are no facts “large” and made “minor” but stories that transcend and others disappear with time. All are part of the fabric at a time and a certain space. This has a lot of injustice in two senses: beautiful oblivion swallows stories while the random rescues those that do not deserve. But in all cases the anecdote is just the excuse that allows literature, ie, literary texts than by analysis or by their formal beauty transcend everyday and circumstantial. Papaya label Salvietti, the ATM automatic, through the political speeches, Bolivian cinema, an eclipse or advertising of Benetton, the book makes a journey through the icons modernity, and revisits each news headline with questions relevant collective imagination. That the book consists of four parts is simply a way to organize the reader, but it is essential in order to read the sections on ” images “,” Society and Culture “,” Politics and Communication ” and “Thinking about technology,” because neither the sections texts and engage one another in an orderly manner interchangeable but as a whole, where each anecdote and reflection that accompanies it, contribute to building a coherent line of thought which teaching in the will. Guglielmone writes aware that it does to educate an audience, the  provincial Sucre, little exposure to second-level readings, ranging beyond the anecdotal. In this cultural context peripheral the book is a proposal to investigate what that exists behind the obvious. That is, beyond the object and find  the trail and the “wake”, a subject of analysis. The readings of reality are multiple because “The eye of the beholder” is culture. Perhaps the look “Outside” and Isabel scientific Guglielmone is not sufficient to prove that learning to read to know read. One thing to recognize characters, words, sentences, and understand its meaning immediately and another thing to weave relationships and meanings, and unlock other codes in the text and in the image. Because the images are read when one wants to see them in depth and not just on its surface appearance. One can look at a photo to identify what is, but Exercise can also see analytically what the image represents. In these exercises is the deliberate intention to dismantle the myths everyday created by mass media, usually with commercial intentions or religious (which is the same). The analysis of representation is what allows us to go beyond the facts and address how as submitted. And this is relevant because the facts alone are not but through the representation that  made of them. The French school to which he belongs Guglielmone is particularly interested in the secondary meanings, rather, the ambiguity that invites to exercise various readings, such as If Benetton advertising. This tradition of analyzing the text / image is not to accept things for what showing on the surface, but which contain (or hide). In this sense, we speak of revelation, ie, the exercise of reading the chronicle of events from behind, and write as did Leonardo, with a mirror. There are better texts than others, which is reasonable considering that is a collection of oddments. Some have suffered more over time  than others. Sometimes supply dominates read information without criticism, as in the chapters on “Star Wars”, “The day he died, the silence “, or” theater of the Andes ” slavery perhaps deliver a weekly or the mission to educate the reader, when noble task it is a city culturally depressed as Sucre. This is evident from texts where the author argues just causes, such as the Keel-community members Keel or animal rights, or terminate smuggling and corruption at border crossings Argentina. I have lived this absence of parameters Sucre cultural Not long ago, when talking with students from the race communication University of San Francisco Xavier, I discovered with horror that they knew nothing. Future journalists, managers mediate between the reality and society, had not heard or Luis Espinal or Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz, and although they had a vague idea of who was George Sanjinés, had never seen a film of the most important contemporary Bolivian filmmaker. Although it was only this, the book has a role to Isabel comply with.
